The Festival of the Spoken Word is a month-long festival of Jewish storytelling told live — through theatre, music, poetry, spoken word, staged readings, comedy, conversation and performance.

Presented by Sydney Jewish Writers Festival, the program brings together artists working at the collision of literature, music and live performance in events staged throughout Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and North Shore.

The festival brings together established and emerging voices creating bold work shaped by memory, identity, history and contemporary Jewish life.

We proudly host our annual festival every August, celebrating the richness and diversity of contemporary Jewish writing from around the world. Our lineup includes Jewish novelists, journalists, screenwriters, performers, and non-fiction writers, and writers of Jewish interest.

In addition to the festival in August, we run events throughout the year, including in conversations, book launches, writing workshops and book club mailouts.

We are committed to recognising excellence in contemporary Australian writing on Jewish subjects. We promote the reading of these texts to inspire current and future authors. See more.
