Join shortlisted writers and audiences for an evening celebrating contemporary Australian writing on Jewish subjects.

Established to recognise excellence in contemporary Australian Jewish writing, the Shalom Collective Australian Jewish Writer Awards honour work across fiction, non-fiction, poetry, playwriting and young writers while supporting the next generation of literary voices.

The evening includes announcement of the 2026 award winners, followed by a conversation with international authors and refreshments.

This year, we are thrilled to announce winners in five categories:

  • The Leslie and Sophie Caplan Award for Jewish Non-Fiction
  • The Bobby Adler Award for Young Jewish Writers
  • The Szymon (Simon) Klitenik Award for Jewish Fiction
  • The Edith Hausmann Award for Jewish Playwrights
  •  The Chaya Fedler Award for Poetry

    Ayelet Tsabari - Author

    Israeli-Canadian author of the novels Songs for the Brokenhearted and The Best Place on Earth, and the memoir The Art of Leaving. Her work has received honours including a National Jewish Book Award, the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and the Canadian Jewish Literary Award, and has been recognised by The New York Times, The Globe and Mail and Kirkus.

  • Yishay Ishi RonBW
    Yishay Ishi Ron - Author

    Israeli novelist whose work draws on lived experience, psychology and questions of trauma and recovery. His novel Dog received two US National Jewish Book Awards and was longlisted for Israel’s Sapir Prize. The Girl Who Rode the White Lion, translated into English by Yardenne Greenspan, is his second novel available in English.

    Michaela Kalowski - Moderator

    Interviewer, moderator and curator working across writers and ideas festivals. Her interviews include Margaret Atwood, Amos Oz, Zadie Smith, Tim Winton, Etgar Keret, Stan Grant and Zeruya Shalev. She was curator of Big Weekend of Books, ABC RN’s annual on-air writers’ festival, and produces and hosts a monthly book conversation series at Petersham Bowling Club. She is also co-presenter and co-writer of the ABC RN podcast Laya’s Way Home.
