Shomer(3)

An Immersive Exhibition by Dor Zlekha Levy

About the Artist and Exhibition:

Dor Zlekha Levy is an Israeli contemporary multimedia artist who specializes in audiovisual installations, video art, and live performances, with sound a core element of his work. Ongoing collaborations with musicians are essential to his working process, from conception to installation. His creations echo the forgotten traditions of the Sephardi and Mizrachi worlds, and explore them in a contemporary light. His works bring to life the voices excluded from Jewish and Israeli cultural discourse in a way that allows them to not only be heard, but be listened to.

The Exhibit will feature a selection of Zleka Levy’s works that explore the relationships between past and present, music and language and collective memory.
Some examples of his works are: Maqamat, Shomer, and Omek-Umk.

Alongside the exhibition, we are inviting school groups to visit the installation and further student knowledge in the arts, music, and Jewish History.

Excursion Details & Opportunity for Schools

This immersive exhibition will run for one month from 21st May – 13th June 2025 at the forumproject gallery in the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct. The Walsh Bay Arts Precinct is Sydney’s modern arts and cultural hub that is home to nine leading performing arts companies that are synonymous with Australia’s performing, music and visual arts. Sydney Theatre Company, Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Sydney Dance Company to name a few.

We invite school groups to experience this exhibition —an immersive visual art installation that brings to life the stories, traditions, culture, and music of Mizrachi and Sephardi communities. Through contemporary audiovisual storytelling, students will gain a deeper understanding of these often-overlooked narratives and their place within Jewish history and identity.

This excursion is particularly relevant for middle and high school students studying:

  • Modern & Classical Hebrew
    • Maqamat explores the use of modern and classical Hebrew in both written and spoken forms, showing how it relates to each other and has changed over time.
    • Shomer gives students exposure to hearing modern Hebrew in a spoken format through story telling.
  • Visual Arts & Photography
Experience audio visual installations, expressing highly esoteric work through impactful visual representation. The use of site-specific galleries to exhibit particular works, an installation vs exhibit. Art through digital media eg interview, software development and audio.
  • Jewish Studies
Students can study the Mizrachi/Sephardi experience in an engaging media, the erasure of certain stories or experiences in our history, and the differentiation of prayer, language, music and culture across Jewish peoplehood. Learn about differing traditions and their cultural expression.
  • Modern History
Learn about migration patterns in the Middle East over various time periods. What oral and written traditions, memories and experiences are carried with communities, how and if they survive.
  • Studies of Religion
Experience the connection between Judaism and Islam, not only as religions, but as living traditions and communities. Learn about the overlap and similarities in customs, language and stories and how these inform religious practice.
  • Music 1 & 2
How has music evolved over time? Has it? And how does geography influence the reading, understanding and composing of music. How can music endure over time and space, and what individual or collective memories can it hold.
